Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory

A group of our Music tech-loving students were privileged to be shown around PEARL this week. Thank you so much to Steve Mayo and Helen King who went out of their way to arrange the meeting and give us an insight into the facility.

We started the tour in a gigantic acoustically treated space which is used for creating mock-ups of outdoor environments, researching the ways that people interact with the spaces around them. Their current project is with TFL, designing a sound that should be omitted by an electric scooter that would cut through all of the other city sounds. This will create a safer interaction between scooter and pedestrian. The students were then treated to a 3D sound experience and learnt about the challenges and conundrums that a sound engineer might face, also the range of recording equipment at their disposal.

We sent some student work in advance and Steve gave a demonstration of how it could be mixed in 3D. Although the student, Cyril, unfortunately could not be there, we were so proud to hear how successful his work sounded on their equipment. We were surrounded by speakers and the intricacies of Cyril’s work were truly brought to life. Cyril’s beat

We were really pleased to make this connection with PEARL and look forward to inspiring the next generation of potential sound engineers!
