Our Mayan Experience

Year 5 enjoyed a fully immersive day as they learnt about the Ancient Maya Civilisation. The children explored fashion and fabrics (inclusive of what this meant about an individual’s status), food, and drink, as well as exploring the games that were enjoyed by many in Maya Society.

The children spent time decorating a Mayan headdress with feathers which was something often worn by the Kings and Nobles in society. Also, year 5 had the opportunity to sample a meal together. This consisted of scrambled egg, plantain, white cheese, tortillas (made from maize), black beans and avocado.

Finally, pupils were able to create Maya worry dolls. They then used the iPads to create a Stop Motion film using their dolls. Pupils worked collaboratively and were able to design a backdrop that linked to what they had learnt about the Maya Society and their environment.
