Oh! Money Money Money…

Year Four have been learning about the different denominations of money and how to combine them to make different amounts.

The children began by sorting and laying out the different coins in numerical value from the least in value to the most in value. Our learners also paid close attention to the various shapes of the coins, they we able to recognise circular coins, pentagonal, heptagonal shaped coins and the most impressive of them all was the twelve sided shaped £1.00 coin. Also known as a dodecagon. The pupils also looked at the notes that we have in circulation and were able to confidently identify the notes by their distinctive colour.

Once the children had familiarised themselves with the different denominations used,  they applied their understanding to calculate a variety of amounts of money. The pupils were further challenged by having to think of two ways of making an amount using different coins. Finally, they were able to challenge their partner by taking turns in creating a sum of money while their partner would count and check that it was accurately calculated that sum.

Very soon the children will be ready to open their very own shop. Watch this space!
