Need for Speed

Year 4 have had a spectacular treat this week. This term, in Science,  we will be learning about Forces and the effect the that have on us and on different objects. For our way in, we took part in a virtual tour of the headquarters of  the British based Formula 1 team, McLaren. The children were so excited! We were privileged  see a wide range their award winning Formula 1 cars and how they have changed and developed over the years.

The experts at McLaren gave us an insight into the complex and intricate nature of the engine of a Formula 1 sport car. They also explained the drivers are subject to five times the amount of g-force while driving and that their bodies have to be extremely strong to cope with it. There was a fascinating replica of one of there Formula cars made entirely of Lego! The entire car – apart from the wheels – made of Lego! We also learnt about the down force needed on the cars while driving at top speed.

It was an enthralling experience for the children and hopefully one that will inspire them to enter into the field of engineering.
