Layer upon layer upon layer!

In year 4, pupils have been learning about different types of rocks and the process that leads to their formation. We discovered that there are three types of rocks which are naturally made, these are Igneous , Sedimentary and Metamorphic. We also learnt that there are human-made rocks which date back to the Roman times! Human made rocks are known as anthropic rocks and have allowed humans to build a number of amazing structures.

The pupils went on to explore the formation of one of the naturally occurring rocks. We madeĀ  used a variety of materials: soft brown sugar, rice, pasta, quinoa and chickpeas, all of which vary in size and texture to replicate the layers of sediments, which over time would have been eroded, compacted and cemented to form sedimentary rocks. We all enjoyed adding the different layers , we were also very careful to avoid accidentally knocking over our rocks but rock erosion does happen dramatically!
