We are thrilled to share some exciting news from our computing class this half term. Our topic, “We Are Zoologists,” has turned our young learners into intrepid explorers, on a mission to discover and document the fascinating world of creepy crawlies in our school grounds.
The children embarked on this adventure armed with magnifying glasses and a spirit of curiosity, ready to search high and low for any bugs they could find. And boy, did they deliver! From under rocks to within bushes, they left no stone unturned in their quest.
Once they found a bug, the next step was to use a classification key to identify it. This involved examining the creatures closely (but not too closely – some of those bugs can be ticklish!). They learned to differentiate between beetles, ants, and everything in between, making them real bug boffins!
After identifying their finds, they added the data to a tally chart. It was a real “count and be counted” exercise! The children have become experts at making little marks and counting them up. The data collected is already helping us understand the biodiversity in our school grounds.
Here are some highlights and funny moments from our bug-tastic adventure:
– Ant-icipation!: One group found a whole colony of ants and decided they were the best multitaskers in the bug world.
– Bee-lieve it or not!: Another group spotted a bee and noted how it was busily buzzing from flower to flower, working harder than a teacher on report-writing day.
Accompanying this post are some wonderful pictures capturing these moments. Look out for the delighted faces of our young zoologists as they uncover the hidden wonders of our school environment.
We hope you enjoy seeing the world through their eyes and perhaps get inspired to go on a bug hunt of your own!
