Eastbrook Is A Treasure Trove!

Give them a reason to write and they will write!

Today, Year 1 took part in an immersive treasure hunting experience to fully prepare them for a piece of diary writing that they will be completing later in the week.

In our current Power of Reading text, ‘How to find gold’, the main characters Anna and Crocodile are lucky enough to find hidden gold. The children of Year 1 needed to share this same experience to truly empathise with the feelings of the characters during such an exciting event. Luckily enough, the children were delivered a letter written by the fearsome, female pirate, Grace O’Malley. Grace explained to the children that she had been passing through the English Channel over the weekend and as Year 1’s engagement with their class text had been so great, she had hidden two bags of treasure in and around our school environment. The children really had to use their virtue of teamwork though, as mean old Grace hadn’t left any treasure maps behind to help. The children showed great perseverance to hunt high and low until, finally, they reaped their reward. On opening the bags of treasure, Year 1 were greeted with the most glistening golden coins, sparkling gems and exquisite jewellery.

On asking the children how they felt finding the gold, some responses included, ‘proud’, ‘grateful’, ‘rich’ and ‘surprised’. I think that Year 1 can definitely include some of these awesome adjectives into their diary writing this week.

What a wonderful learning experience!
